Having taken the gun to the range, it performed like any other 870 would. And flipping it over, the magazine lug has rough welds and is missing blueing in the immediate area around them. So the barrel code indicates a manufacturer date of January 1972. You receiver serial number closely matches the 1972 date so that is the correct year as your gun is obviously older then a 2002 model. The 870 did not exist in 1928 so that is not it. Not only are there rough weld marks at many contact points, the whole rib curves very noticeably to the left. The 'W' is the years of 1928, 1972, or 2002. The third obvious issue that has been difficult to photograph is the rib is welded on very poorly. For the entire life of this firearm, birth onward, it will be prone to rust and require attention. The finish on those areas of the bolt assembly has suffered and is no longer protecting the metal. The second issue is more glaring, the chrome plated bolt assembly was somewhat roughly machined, but worse than that the extractor spring, extractor plunger, and the cavity they occupy was completely rusted. All of the parts are marked with Remington name or logo. It does not have smooth polished steel on the receiver. The serial number on the receiver is CC92294C. The left side of the receiver closest to the stock has the serial number. The left side of the receiver closest to the barrel says Remington 870. I seem to remember an AP grade 870 being offered in the early /mid 70s.I remember looking at a Winchester Model 2200 and the AP Grade Model 870.The AP Grade was at that time 109 and the Winchester 2200 just a tad more. I recently purchased a used 870 12 ga with a 26” barrel. I am running off of memory but I recall that exact style in the late 1960s and early 1970s. ![]()
